Waterworks by Jack Winnick is the fifth book in the Lara and Uri series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel. In this latest action-packed adventure, our husband and wife anti-terrorist team face their most dangerous assignment yet. They need to go deep undercover to unearth the secrets of the latest terrorist plot against the United States. This time, the Iranian terrorists have decided to poison the drinking water supply for Los Angeles. The substance they plan to use, polonium, is extremely difficult to detect. It is highly radioactive and deadly in minuscule amounts. Lara and Uri must undergo reversible cosmetic changes to be unrecognizable to the enemy. They must escape detection while gathering intelligence against the terrorists. Will they be able to remain undercover long enough to gather the information they need and stop the terrorists in time?

One of the aspects I continue to admire about this series, and this book in particular, is the strength and resilience of the female lead. She is intelligent, talented, street-smart, calm, brave, and dedicated. She is no shrinking violet and certainly no damsel in distress. She is responsible for saving her husband and others as often as, if not more, than she needs saving. The world needs more role models like Lara Edmond. Likewise, I admire how Winnick creates a husband who fully supports and admires his wife’s capabilities rather than being intimidated by them. There is no competition between Lara and Uri. I also admire the tight, clean pace of this story. It is loaded with tension and danger, and presented at a pace that gives crisp details about its plot without meandering in distracting directions.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this novel. Winnick’s writing style has only improved over the course of these five books, and it has been my great pleasure to act as witness. It is my fervent hope that he continues this journey in future novels with two people that I feel I know personally.

There are absolutely no grammatical or editorial errors in this entire novel. Everything is formatted and presented magnificently. Winnick clearly has done an amazing amount of research, writing a fictional story based on substances, processes, people, countries, and methods that are real. It makes the entire experience of reading this novel more compelling and more frightening. Rooting for the good guys and booing and hissing at the bad guys has never been easier. For all these reasons, and the ones stated above, I am delighted to give this novel 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys tight political thrillers, action-adventure novels, or fast-paced suspense. The romance between the main characters is real and ongoing, but not overdone. Certainly, anyone who has travelled through the previous four novels with Lara and Uri should come along on the perilous journey. Just make sure you bring your disguise – we’re undercover this time around!
