Religion has been the basis of war since the beginning of human existence. Devil in False Colors by Jack Winnick takes his readers back to the war on terrorism within the U.S. and the war on religion within the Middle East. With the Sunni and Shia at war with each other and both wanting the obliteration of the Jews, this causes chaos and death worldwide. Each religion thinks they are the superior over the other, which in turn, creates turmoil among the leaders, followers, and all bystanders that may be in the way. Nobody is safe and no one is exempt from destruction if the fanatics decide you are part of the problem.

In Devil in False Colors, Middle Easterns and Americans busy themselves with recruiting top infiltrators in their fields. Shia, Sunni, and ISIS, also known as ISIL, concentrate on making their armies bigger and more tactical, while the U.S. focus their resources on police forces and the Joint Terrorism Task Force or JTTF. Uri, recruited from Israel, and Lara, recruited from New York, are brought together to put a stop to the terrorists who have made a horrific presence within the U.S. From public beheadings, to mosque massacres, to the slaughtering of children, there is nothing ISIS will not do to show their devotion to their faith. Uri and Lara are given the difficult task of finding the source of these radicals and putting a stop to these mass killings.

A positive aspect about this novel is the accuracy of which the author explains each radical group and what they stand for, along with the American government groups and why they play an important role in the War on Terrorism. It is very obvious Winnick did extensive research on this war. His work is delicately detailed and brings back to life the dreadful era Americans faced during the rule of ISIS.

There are no negative aspects about this novel. While it is graphic and the scenes are hard to read at times, it does not reflect anything negative upon the author’s writing. Instead, it enhances the fact that he is knowledgeable on the subject.

I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. The intensity behind this masterpiece is overwhelming and wrenches at the heart strings. It gives perspective to both sides of the spectrum; one being the radicals and the other being the ones seeking to stop them. I would recommend this book to anyone in the military, veterans, first responders, and those seeking for a thrilling ride into the backstory of the jihadis and what drove them to such extremes.
