We are introduced to Lonnie Bowers, a professional rodeo cowboy whose current rodeo turns out to be a miserable loss. He struggles to understand the reason behind the sudden string of failures in his career as the doom of his impending divorce from his wife-who wants nothing more to do with him, lingers on his mind. The last thing he wants to hear is what God has to do with him or all of this. Following the entrance of a mysterious-looking overweight man, fate has other plans as he is suddenly thrown into the midst of a dangerous Mexican drug cartel to help rescue his friend Brian. The colour of his skin, ancestry and college degree gives him the advantage to help infiltrate the cartel's hideout a whole lot easier. He does all this, while still trying to repair his relationship with Clarissa. Will Lonnie succeed in getting his friend out and/or winning back his wife's heart? Will he finally let God help or not...?

As the first book in the Border Series, David Griffith did a wonderful job in making Blackwater Crossing well detailed leaving almost nothing to the imagination. This proved a great tool in giving a very vivid mental picture of every scenario making it easier to connect with each character's deepest emotion. While reading, we can effortlessly relate to each character and their moments as their conversations are simple and matter-of-fact. I acknowledge the author's investment in quality research on the rodeo industry. Learning these new terminologies was such a joy ride and broadened my understanding of the subject matter. Beyond this, the book delves deeper into displaying the power within a genuine and invaluable love which unites friends, family and marriages together. All of these are wrapped up in faith in their God and themselves.

I did not fancy the ending of the book as much because it wasn't clear whether Lonnie accepted the faith or not. It was as though he was undecided and didn't completely understand the significance of what Brian had done. It ended albeit vague as concerns this particular aspect.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Blackwater crossing doesn't deserve 1 or 2 stars because it is an extremely well-edited piece of art as a single spelling error was noted. It was a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I encourage fans of mystery and drama who don't mind religious content to make this a must-read. Have your spouse, friends and family members read it as well. It's a book for bonding.
