The Impossible Mock Orange Trial by Thad G. Long told a story of what seemed like an impossible lawsuit in a South Carolina court. There was a vehicle accident that led to the death of one child’s death, multiple injuries for the other children, including a brain injury. The accident happened in a county where the majority of the residents were African American, this also includes all who were involved in the accident. The county at hand has a history of dealing with similar lawsuits, where the big corporations were brought into court and left with a verdict to pay big amounts of money to the plaintiffs. That is what the attorneys for the plaintiff’s tried to do. Ted Born and his younger associate, Dave Thompson, were brought a lawsuit that claimed the tire was defective, and the tire manufacturer should be tried. Not only was the tire manufacturer brought to court, but the vehicle manufacturer was also brought in and tried. The book tells the story from beginning to end of the accident, trial, and after the trial, all while discussing the topic of race and justice throughout the storyline.

The Impossible Mock Orange Trial is positioned as a law thriller, and I would say that stands true. The story was told in great detail, from both sides, step by step throughout the whole process. It was hard to stop reading, at all times I wanted to know what was going to happen in the end. Not only did the author keep something as dense as defense law tense and fast paced, there were deeper motifs and themes throughout the book. There were in-depth discussions of race in and out of the courtroom, the fine line between sympathy and true justice, and how far lawyers will teeter on right and wrong to win a case for millions of dollars.

The only negative I will mention about the book is the length. The detail was incredible, however, at times it felt like the story was dragging on. I think it would have kept the reader feeling like they were physically there, watching each step of the case unravel, with a shorter page count.

I rate this book 3 out 4 stars. I could not keep the book down. I felt like I was watching the plaintiff and defendants first hand, research and work through this case. I did not give the book 4 stars on the basis of how long the book was. There were moments where it felt like the story was dragging on. I don’t believe the book would deserve a rating below 3 because of how realistic the storyline was.

This book would be suitable for young adults and adult readers. Due to the extent of law language, it would be harder for children to understand what is truly happening.
