Review of Demon Freaks
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is one of the most intriguing books I have read this month. It contains elements of comedy and horror. The plot revolves around four teenagers: Bing Slaughter, Ron Slaughter, Meat and Kaitlyn.
Bing and Ron, who are on the verge of expulsion must perform well on their SAT to pursue their passion, or they may be forced to work at McDonald's. So they all four plan to meet up at Meat's parent's cabin for late-night study but things do not go as planned as soon enter their history teacher appears and tries to kill them with a dagger. Things soon become more complicated as the dagger is possessed and functions on its own. Will they survive? Will they be able to prepare for the exam? Will they be able to pass their test while trying to save their lives and return home safely?
The author has included just the right amount of horror, action and humour to keep the reader's attention. The book was easier to understand because had a kept change of passage as to whose side of the story is being said. the author The plot begins with regular class, kids studying and then progresses to a spooky evil night. The author stayed consistent throughout the plot, leaving no details out and explaining everything well enough. What I liked best was when Meat was conversing with the demon but Kaitlyn mistook him. That was a lot of fun. The demon's character was exactly the type that would creep you out, but the author kept the humour in there as well. My topic of interest is supernatural activities, magic and demons, and the author kept up with it without any disappointment with the plot.
There were many characters explored in the story but, I felt that Kaitlyn's should have been more fully developed because we knew nothing about her except that she is a member of the band and she enjoys showering. The author also added a sense of maturity in the teenagers, which was unnecessary because it made the plot seem unreal as people of their age are supposed to be scared whenever they face any danger.
Although it is a young adult book, I recommend it to people over the age of fifteen years because there is some gore. It is a horror fantasy, so anyone who enjoys a fast-paced, eerie, and humorous plot will enjoy it.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The plot was to the point but there were some grammatical errors and I would have enjoyed it more if Kaitlyn's character had been described in greater detail, as this would have given me a better understanding of her.
