East Wind, 2nd Edition by Jack Winnick is an intriguing story about a nuclear bomb attack on the United States and the two agents who must work together to stop the enemy before they strike again. Uri, an Israeli field agent with the Mossad, and Lara, an American field agent with the FBI, are our main protagonists. Uri’s skills in the Arabic language combined with Lara’s skills as a code-breaker make them the perfect team to decode the clues left by the terrorists to discover where the next bomb will be detonated. Will they be able to solve the clues and stop the terrorists in time?

One of the things I loved about this book was how the action grabbed my attention from the first chapter. This novel is not a slow burn. It personalizes the terror by showing you the actions and consequences of average people. I also admired the inclusion of a smart, resourceful, and strong female character who is not afraid to intimidate her co-workers to complete her mission. The part that I appreciated the most was Winnick’s ability to show us how innocent young people can be duped into following a terrorist group by bombarding them with anti-American propaganda. Things are not always simple and certainly not only black or white.

One negative aspect of the story for me was the detailed descriptions of how to build a nuclear device, from where materials may be purchased to the science of achieving critical mass during the explosion. This part travelled a bit too far into the scientific realm and took up too much of the storyline. Likewise, while I appreciated the historical lesson on tensions in the Middle East, it was a bit too specific in detail and slowed down the pace of the story.

East Wind, 2nd Edition includes a little bit of everything that makes a story memorable. This novel incorporates a healthy dose of political science, a large serving of history, plenty of action and adventure, a good bit of suspense, and a smattering of romance. All these ingredients are combined magnificently by Winnick to create a recipe for the beginning of a long and successful series. Additionally, there were no editing errors, save for one or two formatting issues. For these reasons, I am delighted to give this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Middle Eastern history, action, adventure, intrigue, and just a bit of mystery and romance. There are some graphic scenes, so skip this book if you are squeamish. This book also travels back and forth in its timeline, so skip this book if you are looking for a simple, linear story. Otherwise, ride along with our agents and enjoy!
