In Soul Seeker the author Kaylin McFarren gives us a brand-new way to enjoy the angels vs. demons/good vs. evil storyline. Benjamin Poe is a former fire captain who is on death row for the horrific murder of his son. Crighton is a soul collector for Lucifer who enjoys toying with his victims before he collects. Ariel is a Guardian angel in training on a mission to guide deserving souls to Heaven. At first blush the main characters seem a bit stereotypical to the genre. However, Kaylin McFarren is masterful in picking apart these stereotypes and re-weaving them into deliciously complex characters with a storyline that left me searching the internet hoping that Soul Seeker was the first book in a series that I would get to explore.

One of the things that I loved about Soul Seeker is that Kaylin McFarren is incredible about teasing the reader with foreshadowing and hinting at deeper and more complex histories of the characters in this book. Even for Ariel, the Guardian angel in training, McFarren hints at a past and a future that for me generated more questions. Who is this Rhiannon that raised Ariel and also has history with Crighton? Why did Rhiannon raise Ariel? What happened to Ariel’s parents? Who are Ariel’s parents? Are these questions going to be answered in the sequels to this book?

I honestly, cannot find any negative points about this book. What at first appeared to be a stereotypical heaven vs. hell storyline quickly evolved into a rich narrative that gave me enough of a taste of the world unseen that I had to know if this was a standalone book or part of a series. Lucky me, it is the first of a series.

I am rating Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren as 4 out of 4 stars. I am giving it this rating because McFarren was able to take a classic troupe of angels vs. demons, which can get bland quickly, and inject it with so much unexpected flavor and dimension that I found it difficult to stop reading.

I am recommending this for those people who like a good supernatural thriller seasoned with a bold romance and a pinch of horror and suspense.
