Have you ever wished that you could just point your finger at someone and they just drop dead on the spot? Well, E. Alan Fleischauer allows us to live vicariously through Jake Silver in his novel Just Die. Jake Silver is a retired financial planner who suffered a stroke while he was out celebrating with his friends. He awoke with the realization that he could just point his finger at someone or something, whisper two words, and the person or thing drops dead on the spot. He must now figure out whether to use his power for good or bad.

Just Die was a very entertaining and enjoyable read. The author took a concept that we all think about at some point in our lives and spun it into a very interesting novel. I also liked that the author did not make us privy to any information beforehand and we experienced the discovery with Jake as it happened. For example, the first time Jake used his powers he was wondering, just like I was, if he had done it or if it was just a coincidence. Another aspect of the novel that I liked was that it was not puffed up with unnecessary details. The novel flowed systematically while still maintaining its creativity. I also liked the fact that the change from one setting to another was clearly indicated so as to limit confusion.

The only aspect of Just Die that negatively impacted my reading experience was that the further into the novel I got, the faster the setting transitions came. For instance, the author would spend only a few paragraphs talking about what is going on with Jake and then change to what’s going on with another character.

I rate Just Die 4 out of 4 stars. It was a creatively written and interesting novel and I loved the concept on which it was based. This book seems to have been professionally edited as I found no errors in my reading. Overall, this novel was a very satisfying read. I really enjoyed living vicariously through Jake Silver.

I think this book will appeal to people of all ages. The concept is easy to relate to and I think all ages would enjoy it. In addition, I think this book would be a great choice for book clubs because the use or non-use of Jake’s power would make for exceptional discussions.
