Do you have a neighbor or a relative whose less than socially acceptable behavior fills your life with unending drama? If so, have you thought about people whose daily job is to identify and apprehend such characters? What would their life look like? How much drama do they have to face daily? And how do they even decompress after facing massive amounts of uncivil experiences? If these questions have piqued your interest, then pick Twisted But True by Darren Burch.

Darren is a retired police officer with more than three decades of law enforcement experience. He worked as a lead detective in many tricky cases, including some adult sex crimes. It would not be wrong to say that his job has lent him a unique position to see how low human morals can reach. With this book, he wants you to experience firsthand what a typical police officer’s life looks like, what dangers they face every second, and how they handle such situations to protect us. I know the storyline of this book seems grim, but don’t worry. Darren—with his dark humor and excellent writing skills—will keep you entertained for hours. Move over the unrealistic cop shows and pick this book.

The best thing about this book is its dark humor. Phrases like uncharted yellow waters show Darren’s wit. Chapters like "Chasing Mad Cow" will leave you in splits. The professional editing and the clean design enhanced the reading experience. I did not encounter any errors or issues. This book helps us see why police make some unconventional decisions on the spot, even if it isn’t the most appealing solution.

Darren uses nicknames to hide the identity of the suspects and criminals. Some nicknames were not my favorite, but given the morbidity of the situations, I understand that such dark humor becomes a coping mechanism. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I do not have a single negative comment about Darren’s writing. That’s why I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

When I picked this book, I thought it would be like reading a dry police report. But now, I will safely say that if Darren decides to write any tv show, it would be an instant hit; he knows how to entertain. This book contains dark humor, sexual assault cases, crude topics, details of terrible crimes, and gruesome descriptions. So, sensitive readers and readers who don’t enjoy dark comedy might want to skip this. On the other hand, if you like dark humor and police procedurals, then this book is an excellent pick.

This book sounds like a nonconventional police story with an exceptional plot. It seems to be humourous and have a detailed crime scene description.

It is good (and healthy) that the author can use humor to recount these uncivil experiences. I may consider this read when I am in a mood for dark humor. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

Thank you for your thorough and entertaining review!
