Adventure, mystery, problem-solving, fun, and a bit of trivia are baked together beautifully in The Adventures of Sweet Pickles McGillicuddy: The Mystery of the Disappearing Ruby Earring by James C. Wright. This book follows Pickles and her friend Deardra on their evening of sleuthing throughout the small town of Anglers Cove. Their objective: prove their friend Thomas is innocent of stealing a ruby earring.

Overall, I thought this book did a great job of capturing the essence of youth and wanting to solve mysteries. Though they have the intention of clearing their friend’s name, The Adventures of Sweet Pickles McGillicuddy: The Mystery of the Disappearing Ruby Earring is still very lighthearted. In other words, Pickles and Deardra are not only motivated by the desire to help their friend but are also motivated by the thrill of solving mysteries. I find that very admirable because it gives the book a balance of moderate seriousness without inciting too much stress or anxiety.

I also liked how much characterization was given to the town of Anglers Cove. In their quest to solve the mystery of the missing ruby earing, Pickles and Deardra visit numerous places throughout the town. From the local ice cream shop to some of the streets they bike through, each location has its unique charm and description. So, it feels like you get to travel the town with the characters.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, character-building could use some improvement. As Pickles and Deardra venture throughout Anglers Cove, they encounter several other characters. However, a few of these characters seemed very one-dimensional. For example, some don’t have much description, are solely used to progress the story as their occupation, or are mentioned briefly in Angler Cove’s history. For the applicable characters, expanding on their descriptions would be quite helpful.

Another thing that could use improvement is interaction with Thomas. As Thomas is the individual Pickles and Deardra are trying to help, it would be beneficial to include more interaction with him. As it stands, Pickles and Deardra primarily interact with him towards the end of the book. If Thomas was shown interacting with his friends a tad more, perhaps even through memory, it would give readers more indication of why Pickles and Deardra want to help him so badly.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 Stars. I found that it was rather enjoyable, very light, and a good beginner read. However, the character-building and interaction with Thomas leave much to be desired. Additionally, I found several errors. Most of these errors were found towards the beginning of the book, so it made it difficult to get into and enjoy when I started.

I recommend The Adventures of Sweet Pickles McGillicuddy: The Mystery of the Disappearing Ruby Earring to young readers between the ages of 7 and 9. This is a great book for children that enjoy mysteries and are trying to improve their reading skills. Fans of the Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton series will most likely enjoy this book too.
