Have you ever wondered what goes on in a terrorist’s mind? How about a spy’s mind? Perhaps you have wondered what it might be like to be on a team in charge of taking down a group of criminals masterminding nuclear terror threats. Author Jack Winnick explores all these and more perspectives in his gripping crime fiction, East Wind, Second Edition, set circa 2013.

United States federal agent Lara Edmond has developed an algorithm to detect terroristic activity on the web in a post-9/11 America. Meanwhile, as nuclear threats from a rebel Muslim group become increasingly severe, Uri Levin from the Mossad (also known as the national intelligence of Israel) makes his way to the United States. Together, Lara and Uri partner up to discover and dismantle the terrorist group’s nuclear plans. At different points throughout the novel, the perspective changes from Lara to Uri as well as some of the criminals involved.

There are many wonderful things to enjoy about this book. First and foremost, the creative detail paid to spy and investigative equipment is unmatched. One such example comes quickly in the book on page 5, where Uri is wearing a ring with poison-tipped needles that, on contact, release a nerve toxin paralyzing the intended target in seconds. Another wonderful asset to this book is Lara, a strong female primary character in a predominantly male-dominated career field. She is clever and thinks of things many on her team hadn’t considered. Although she has developed the thick skin needed for a career as a federal agent, she is not without fear or anxiety, and those real emotions elevate her to a relatable protagonist. Winnick successfully transitions perspectives from chapter to chapter, making for an engaging and action-packed plot. As someone interested in criminal psychology, I enjoyed reading the perspective of Walid—a man part of the rebel group who faces his own set of qualms and moral dilemmas about his duties.

There are only a couple of very minor negative aspects. While I did come across some punctuation errors, typos, and formatting issues, they were not major and did not take away from my overall reading experience. Second, characters that are members of the FBI and Homeland Security use slang like “for real” and “legit” that, to me, appeared just slightly out of context and character. When discussing a suspect giving a confession on page 169, a Homeland Security member says, “‘I think he’s for real.”

Because the positive aspects far outweigh the negative aspects, I am pleased to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would highly recommend this novel to those who enjoy reading crime fiction, especially relating to terrorism and spies. I would recommend this to mature audiences for a few gory scenes, one erotic (although not very detailed) event, and some instances of profanity. I would also recommend this book to anyone interested in nuclear physics or physic fiction, as Jack Winnick did a fantastic job balancing out technicalities with a fictional terroristic threat in a politically turbulent climate. Ultimately, this was a great read, and I look forward to reading the second book in the Lara and Uri series.

As someone interested in criminal psychology, I enjoyed reading the perspective of Walid—a man part of the rebel group who faces his own set of qualms and moral dilemmas about his duties.

That's a really interesting aspect of the book, I'd like to see how Walid deals with his complex dilemma. Your review gave me helpful insights into the characters, especially Lara and the challenges she faces. Thanks for your well considered review, it's tempting me to read a book I wouldn't normally choose.

@Oyedeji Funmilayo it is quite a troubling concept. Jack Winnick did a great job revealing twisted logic behind rebel groups and how they may “reason” their attacks. Thank you!

@Sarah1738 I look forward to reading more with her. Thank you!
