Review of The Girl Who Knew Da Vinci
Great love stories are timeless, as are great works of art. In The Girl Who Knew Da Vinci by Belle Ami, readers are drawn into the art world by way of not one, but three epic love stories.
In present day, struggling art historian Angela Renatus and charming art detective Alex Caine team up to find a missing wedding portrait, allegedly painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1475. Does this painting truly exist? And if so, where is this wedding portrait depicting the love story of Fioretta Gorini, a close friend of Da Vinci’s, and Giuliano Medici? More importantly, why has Angela been having dreams about and visions involving Fioretta, Giuliano, Leonardo and the portrait? When Angela also starts having visions of Italian Sophie Caro and her German lover Gerhard Jaeger during World War II involving the same portrait, she knows that her connections to these women and this portrait run deep. As Angela and Alex become enmeshed in the mystery of the painting and search for answers both in the past and in the present, they fall deeper in love and in danger. For someone evil is also looking for the portrait and the riches it could bring and is willing to commit murder to get them. Will history repeat itself or will our present day lovers figure out the mystery in time?
This novel is a well-balanced blend of romance, adventure, mystery and suspense with just a dash of historical fiction. The pace of the story keeps the plot moving along at a satisfying stride, I was an enthusiastic reader. While some books involving art history or historical fiction can become bogged down in excessive descriptive detail, this novel does not, providing just enough description to allow the reader to appropriately picture art, architecture and countrysides. Because this is also a romance, there are increasing incidences of sex scenes, some of which are quite colorful and detailed. A range of profanity, from mild to vulgar is also present.
There is mild violence in this book as well as a couple of incidences of rape fantasy that are thankfully brief. These scenes are intended to show the depth of evil of the villains. One of the drawbacks of this novel are the numerous grammatical and typographical errors that are present. Unfortunately, there were more than ten. For this reason, I am forced to rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars .
This book would be a perfect read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery with adventure and hot romance thrown in. The adventures comes in the form of a type of time travel, so anyone who enjoys that genre should read this book. This book is the first in a series, and I, for one, cannot wait to read more.
