Review of E M P Honeymoon
The Book “EMP Honeymoon” is written by Dorothy May Mercer. The book is an interesting read for young adult fiction lovers. The story is about the adventures of a newlywed couple as they stumble on critical information while on their honeymoon.
The book revolves around the idea of Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) and its impact. Based on this premise the author has woven a story making the readers wonder about its eventuality. The story is interwoven with suspense, romance, and a well-researched account of EMP.
I liked the extensive research included by the author in the book, which gives it authenticity and belief from the readers, in the theme. The characters of the protagonists are well developed throughout the book. There is a backstory of the newlyweds, their excitement in the unusual turn of events and yet their longing of spending time together is clearly expressed. Some light has been shed on the bureaucracy of the two countries in the story, where it is time-consuming and difficult to reach the President/Dictator in case of urgent matters by the protagonists. The style of writing makes it an engaging read for younger audiences. The romance between the two main characters is sufficient to arouse interest in the minds of young readers, without going overboard.
A lot of characters that are not important to the main story have been given importance in the book, which for me was diluting the mystery that was being built up, for example, the bell boy who brought the jeep for the protagonists or the intern at the Space Station. The terrorists on the island, on the other hand, are rather mild, naïve, and unsuspecting, reducing the impact of the story. There is a point in the story where a crucial cell phone of the terrorists is acquired by the protagonists, and the terrorists do not even bother searching for the device. Some important conversations towards the end of the book seem rather unrealistic, where the President is enquiring about non-urgent matters in a time of heightened urgency. The book concluded rather quickly towards the end, which was slightly disappointing after the suspense build-up.
Overall, the book makes an engaging read for young adults, I would give it 3 out of 4 stars. While the writing style is engaging and informative, in a suspense novel, the mild antagonists and the conclusion were slightly disappointing. The book uses offensive words twice. I could not find any typographical or grammatical errors in the book a great job has been done by the editors.
