Slater Barnes picked to study medicine because he wants to help sick people. To him, doctors are good guys. However, things begin to take a drastic turn when he realises medicine is nothing like he envisioned. Driven by his zeal, he pursues this career even when his mental health, physical health, and his love life are at stake. Against all odds, he applies for his internship at a public hospital where he believes his dreams will fall into place. Although Overwhelmed, Slater finally begins to love his job, but when a merger between this hospital and a private hospital is announced, this feeling doesn't last long. For Slater, this is a threat to trample on his dreams and all that medicine stands for. He and some of his colleagues decide to take action against this. Little do they know it is more than just a merger, but a conspiracy that may be too much for them to handle.

Days Of The Giant by RJ Petrella is a beautifully written, suspense-filled novel that gives a naturalistic view of the medical world. Although fictional, the author fights in a very clever way the obvious differences between private and public health care systems. I didn't think I would love or enjoy this book (as much as I did) when I picked it up. Everything about the book was intriguing. The author's mode of narration was Simple yet mesmerising. Every medical term was explained so well. I loved how no detail was left out while describing scenarios. It was as though the author made conscious efforts to allow the reader to understand the story being told.

Every character in the book had a personality that gave a thrilling effect to the story. Slater's sarcastic personality was filled with so much humour that he easily became my favourite character. There was something about his girlfriend, Sofia, that had me suspicious of her throughout the story. I also loved Ally's bubbly personality; everything about her was so childlike and delightful. In this terrific book, I had the opportunity to understand the different views of the types of medical practitioners we have in hospitals. Also, I was fascinated by how Slater's affairs showed that you may truly love someone or something, but it could still be wrong. I wasn't ready for the crime and murder this book greeted me with, and it further increased my fascination with the book.

Unlike every other book I am used to, this book was narrated using alternating perspectives between Slater and his father. At first, I was confused as to whose Point of view I was reading. I did get used to it with time, but I wished it was indicated at the beginning of each narrative, whose Point of view is being narrated; to aid the smooth flow of reading. Besides this, everything about the book was lovely.

I'd rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars as I had a pleasant experience reading this book. Everything about it was up to par.

I would recommend this book to physicians (aspiring and practising), lovers of crime and thriller novels and lovers of medical stories as well. This book contains some references to the Christian faith and while some non-religious people may not find it as a hindrance to enjoying the book, I do not recommend it to people who are sensitive to the mentions of God.

I’ll definitely love to find out what was also behind the merger and why slater saw it as a threat. Nice review.
