Breakers by Barry W. Litherland is a paranormal mystery about one man who arrived in a small town and left nothing but fear and disaster in his wake. It starts with a drunk, drug smuggling fisherman who sees his friend murdered by an otherworldly creature. When he runs to tell the sheriff what happened, no one believes him due to his reputation. But once newcomers arrive to town to build on an inherited piece of land, everyone can sense that something is a little off in their community.

From mysterious murders, imaginary friends, to a little bit of unraveling a history that is begging to be uncovered, this story will have you thinking and guessing the entire ride. A touch of past to present storytelling and flipping between characters like using a tv remote to change the channel, the author can maneuverer you around this story with impressive ease. I truly liked how many perspective points the author gave so that you are able to build each character in your mind. They aren’t just names anymore because you are taken inside the minds of each of them to see what they see and feel their feelings.

The book is a bit of a slow burner, I will admit, but my curiosity started building up inside of me as I continued to read. Once my curiosity was peaked, there was hardly any putting this book down. The way the author utilizes words to construct the scenes and the weight of emotions is simply wonderful. You feel as if you are there watching this town hunt for this mysterious killer and learn about their ancestors. I am very glad that I gave this book a chance to amaze me.

Therefore, I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. I did not give 4 stars because there are a few long and dull moments within the story, however that did not keep me from reading until the end. Despite this, the author continues to build the anticipation, and everything you were wanting to know from the beginning starts coming together toward the end. The author also leaves a lot of foreshadowing within the tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat, even through the less exciting moments.

This was a great book, and I will definitely recommend it to anyone who loves small town crimes, murder-mysteries, and a touch of paranormal interest as well. I would easily say this book is appropriate for teens and up to adults as the characters in the story consist of this age range as well. This helped me to make connections with the ones around my personal age and sympathize with them as the book progressed.
