Slater Barnes does a good job of tending to his patients at the Boston City Hospital. As an intern, he stays focused on learning the ropes of his chosen profession from the senior staff and staying on good terms with his colleagues. All that is about to change once news comes out that the city officials are putting together a plan to merge Boston City Hospital with their rival, Academy Hospital, a privately run institution, supposedly in a bid to keep the budget afloat. This sets the staff at the rival hospitals on a collision course. It does not help that the head of Academy Hospital just so happens to be Slater's stepfather, while the spearhead for the opposition movement is his close friend and roommate. Now he must navigate the minefield of hospital politics while trying to make some headway in his confusing love life.

Days Of The Giants takes you deep into the medical world using a setting that revolves around the daily running of Boston hospitals. It lays bare some of the deep-seated rivalries that exist between the different staff in a modern medical institution. Most of this is kept hidden from patients and visitors by a veneer of public decorum.

I absolutely love the storyline, R.J. Petrella uses his experience as a physician to put together a mystery novel out of the supposed monotony of hospital activities. The language used in the interaction between the characters in the book is an accurate depiction of what one would hear in such surroundings. The character development is quite good, right down to those hidden flaws some of the best caregivers are known to hide from the prying eyes of the public.

If you are looking for a good old fashioned mystery novel to entertain yourself then this is one book I would recommend for you to read. The story has more than adequate suspense to hold your attention. Romance genre followers will be attracted to the love triangle that Slater creates between himself and his love interests. The conclusion of the story nearly brought tears to my eyes.

R.J. Petrella's novel explains the colliding worlds of public medicine and municipal administration like never seen before. The book is filled with the kind of humour you would only find within the walls of a hospital, The storyline is gripping and it builds in suspense right up till the end of the book. I did not notice anything in particular I did not like about the book and the editing is quite professional as there are no noticeable errors within it. It is because of these reasons I rate this book, 4 out of 4 stars.
