I tend to feel a certain degree of frustration whenever I pass through the ordeal of reading a sequel without getting to read the first book. It feels like I have missed out on all the good stuff at the beginning and have to make do with the rest of the story while piecing together the hidden clues and subplots to the storyline I never got to experience from the start. In truth, the art of carrying the momentum from a first book on to a sequel is not so simple, and I am always curious to see the results of such attempts.

The Attuned by Gary B. Haley is one of those books; the story picks up with the principal character trying to make his way back home while evading the attentions of his pursuers. He uses his repertoire of skills to get himself out of trouble on more than one occasion, but only time will tell if his unique abilities will be enough to get him back home safely.

This is a rather peculiar story, I noticed the storyline follows not one, but three different characters fluidly. I have to admit that I found this pleasantly puzzling. I also like the character development that the author uses in this book. It is a bit limited seeing as anyone reading it is assumed to have read the first book in the series but there is just enough information for the reader to catch onto the roles of the different characters in the story and tag along. The author puts quite an admirable effort into describing the different locations in the book. His detailed description of the Canadian wilderness and wildlife is nothing short of impressive, to say the least. It more than makes up for the somewhat predictable storyline.

I was not particularly impressed with the storyline. I expected a certain degree of twists and excitement while following the adventures of the hero in the book, but what I got did not meet my expectations. The pace of the story felt a tad sedate, apart from the incident involving the scorpion nest, I did not come across any other part of the story that piqued my curiosity levels.

If you are a fan of adventure stories, I would recommend you read this book. It does have quite a bit of that within the book as our hero makes his way across continents. There is a romantic angle to the book, I am certain romance genre readers will be drawn to the blossoming love story within it.

The Attuned is reasonably well written and the editing is quite professional as I found very few errors in it. Gary B. Haley does an adequate job with this story. The storyline may not have hit the high notes I was expecting, but it still manages to hold a reader's attention. I rate this book, 3 out of 4 stars.
