Review of E M P Honeymoon
EMP Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer is a continuation of her McBride romance series but can be read as a stand-alone book.
It follows Kelly and police officer Tom Turbolo while they are on their honeymoon in Honduras. Kelly enters a gift shop one day and stumbles upon a foreign military plot against the USA. She contacts her brother, who is a US senator and is sent help in the form of his highly trained female team. The senator's personal assistant informs her husband, a highly placed air force officer, who gets his agency and the federal government involved. During the team's investigation, they come across a CIA agent who is also investigating in Honduras.
This book is not really a romance, there is a little flirting between the CIA agent and one of the senator's team. The novel is a fast-moving thriller that explores the idea of an attack on America by a fictional Asian nation with a ‘dear leader.’ In my opinion, it is a thinly veiled description of a regime on the Korean Peninsula.
The book is factually correct when it comes to technology like satellites and electromagnetic pulses, there is an appendix at the back of the book that explains these topics in detail. There is also a list of characters organized by the chapters in which they are first mentioned. (Although I found it curious that the women from the senator's team have not been included in this list.)
I found the book to be a light but enjoyable read that would be great as a book to read by the pool or on a flight; a fun holiday read or as an escape from the everyday. The only problem I had believing the plot was that once government agencies like the air force and the chiefs of staff become involved, they don’t provide their own “boots on the ground” but leave our little band of heroes to continue with the action.
The book was professionally edited and did not contain any obscenities or adult themes, so I believe it would be appropriate for all readers who enjoy thrillers, spy novels, or mysteries. I found it very entertaining and hard to put down. However, the above-mentioned problem with the plot was hard for me to get past. I kept wondering when the cavalry would arrive and take over. For this reason, I rate EMP Honeymoon 3 out of four stars.
