In the novel EMP Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer, Sergeant Tom Turbulo and Kelly McBride are on their honeymoon in Honduras at a luxury resort. Little do they know their week of planned excursions and complimentary margaritas is going to be interrupted by Kelly’s discovery of a terrorist’s computer lab. Tom and Kelly use their excellent combination of skills and personal connections to investigate. They eventually combine forces with a gorgeous CIA operative, and two women from Senator McBride (Kelly’s brother)’s office back in the USA. During their investigation, they learn of a plan to unleash an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) across North America; the danger of an EMP is described in detail by Dr. Peter Kinney whom we briefly meet in Chapter 2. Additionally, they find that a fellow vacationer, Sue Lin, is not as she seems. The reader is also introduced to General Li and Jung Lo back in the Homeland. General Li is the head of the mission in the homeland, while Jung Lo is the lead scientist who is secretly working to undermine these terrorist plans. Will the terrorists succeed, and wipe out all electricity in North America? Or will the team of Americans stop them in time? Will Jung Lo successfully sabotage mission, or will he be caught? The only way to find out is to read EMP Honeymoon!

This book is full of fun and spunky characters, all of whom are physically gorgeous. The women are smart, scrappy, and courageous while the men are strong, helpful team players. Descriptions of situations, actions, and settings are clearly stated; no confusion as to where the characters are or what they are doing. There is just enough immediate action to hook a reader into the story, then introduces some emotions and exposition. As well, the story flows properly with no mistakes in chronology. The reader will have the chance to read from both sides of the fight – those planning the attack and those defending or preventing the attack. The science discussed is accurate, including references to actual related historical events, and clearly explained – you don’t need to know much about science to enjoy this science fiction!

The dialogue could feel a bit stilted and unnatural as Dorothy May Mercer often uses the characters to describe the scenes. Sometimes simple actions are described in agonizing clarity – if you weren’t sure how to change a password, you will after reading this book! Some of the plot is thin. Some characters are introduced in great detail for a small part, and others had storylines open up that were not explored (e.g. there was talk of mutiny in some detail, then was never referenced again). Tom and Kelly both conveniently have the perfect skills and amazing high-level connections needed. The least believable part was the USA government working smoothly with other departments and other countries, and providing a sufficient budget to mitigate a potential crisis...

Overall, this was a fun book to read/listen to and I recommend it! I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was a fun read, with spunky, smart, likeable characters. Depending on what view I was reading from, I was always rooting for them! Dorothy May Mercer does an excellent job of making likeable characters with real flaws and weaknesses, and scenarios based around realistic, sound science. However, the star was lost from awkward dialogue, and the sometimes thin plot.

If you are looking for a fun, light science fiction novel with a realistic premise, then EMP Honeymoon is the novel you are looking for! Many of the characters, even the antagonists, would make admirable role models. Most of the family would enjoy this book, but there are some mentions of mature themes to be aware of, including mild profanities, consensual sex, politics, torture, and world domination. Dorothy May Mercer handles these topics with a good combination of fun and respect.
