Review of Days of the Giants
“Doctors can go either way. Selfish or selfless.” Slater Barnes’ father says. Slater thinks doctors are always selfless. How could they not be? They give up so much of themselves to take care of others.
Slater chooses to intern at Boston City Hospital when the hospital is in a dire state. Peter Doyle, Boston City's mayor, wants to leave behind a legacy. He, therefore, announces a renovation of Boston City Hospital. However, the nature of this renovation breeds doubt in a lot of the hospital's staff. Slater Barnes finds himself in a unique position in the middle of his residency. When faced with the decision, what will he choose: selfishness or selflessness?
I like Days of the Giants by RJ Petrella in its entirety. It starts with a prologue that piqued my interest. It has a solid plot, as I did not find any plotholes. The author adds necessary details to the story as it progresses. The flow of the story is also good. I like how Petrella integrates backstory into the storyline. I also like how effortless the transition between scenes is. Slater and his Deceased father, who is in heaven, narrate the story. Each narrator has a unique voice, and they both tell the story as if they are talking to you one on one. I like this unique way of storytelling as it provided information that would not be accessible from Slater’s point of view alone. The descriptions paint a good picture of the environment, characters, and actions. There is humor and irony in the book too.
There is suspense too. When I thought I could take a break, I found something that nudged me to keep reading. Character development is also good, as the characters are realistic. Petrella uses simple, easy-to-understand English. I appreciate how the story only contains essential details. No fluff. The editing is good. I only found one minor error, and I commend the editorial team for a job well done. The pace suits the story. It is a moderate pace, but during the action-packed scenes, the thrill is evident. Finally, I like how Petrella ties all loose ends at the end of the story. Days of the Giants is a book I will not forget. There are also suggestions of books for further reading after the acknowledgments section.
I observed two things that put me off a little. The first is that this book contains a lot of profanity. After a few chapters, however, I stopped focusing on them and decided to enjoy the story. The second is the erotic scenes in the book. They are steamy, and I recommend this book to mature readers only.
Regardless of those two reasons, I enjoyed Days of the Giants immensely. It is a hard-to-put-down book. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars for captivating me from start to finish. I recommend it to lovers of medical thrillers with a hint of action, activism, and love. They should also stomach a lot of profanity and some eroticism.
