The Show by Adam Marcon is a thriller novella. In this short book, we follow Peter Grain. He is part of the United League of Exhibitionists, which is a group of killers who murder people for entertainment. They are paid handsomely to entertain the public, who have lost a lot of morality after going through a war. This novella revolves around one assignment Peter goes on. Some unexpected twists and turns will make Peter question himself, his job, and the world he lives in.

It is a story told from a first-person viewpoint. So, the reader only gets Peter’s perspective and emotional reaction to the storyline. Usually, I am not a fan of this kind of narrative, but it works here. Maybe because it is a short and shocking tale, it serves the purpose better. Either way, it enthralled me. Peter, as the lead character, is captivating, imperfect, and observant. He is a trickster, and I tried not to care about him. However, he won me over. With a witty inner monologue and a personality that doesn’t take himself too seriously, it was hard not to like Peter.

Overall, this book has a satisfying ending. Nonetheless, I can easily see this as a series. I think the author created an interesting fictitious world. There is so much more to explore and expand the plotline. I love this beautiful cover. Yet, above everything else, my favorite part of this story is the allegorical meaning behind it. Without giving any spoilers, I enjoyed the intentional art and the way the author writes. He presented a provocative and outrageous storyline that is still very easy to understand.

This book is out of my comfort zone. Yet, I am glad I read it. The author is a talented writer. Understandably, it is surprising to learn that this is a debut. I didn't find anything I disliked about this story. Furthermore, there were just a couple of errors. So, the editing was exceptional. For all of those reasons, I have to rate this book with a perfect score of four out of four stars.

I would recommend this short book to all readers who are looking for a quick, fast-paced, and unique fiction story. There are thriller and crime elements presented throughout the book, but be aware of the gruesome murder scenes and vulgar language. Besides the obvious recommendation to thriller genre readers, I think horror fans might give this one a chance, too.

Reminds me of some Stephen King novels that I’ve read. The whole loss of morality storyline intrigues me.
