Review of Twisted But True
I have often wondered what it takes to be a policeman. To be in uniform and step out on the daily beat knowing fully well that when push comes to shove the paramount thing that will be on your mind always remains to serve and protect the innocent. Deep down I sometimes harboured fantasies of engaging in the long running detective work with the sole intention of bringing a criminal to justice or even the electrifying car chases trying to catch a perp who is driving at breakneck speed. It all sounds like so much fun that sometimes I have actually envied those brave men.
Twisted But True brought me back to Earth with a very distinct thud. This compilation of a retired officer's various interactions with the criminal elements that made up his precinct could not be any further from my assumptions than night is from day. It is hard hitting and unbelievably blunt. Just the thought of having to arrest a faeces flinging character without applying lethal force stomps my imagination.
Darren Burch expresses himself candidly all through the book. You can practically feel his emotions envelope you as he describes the life threatening situations he placed himself in during his career. He alternates between the humorous episodes and the sad incidents so smoothly and the timely addition of a twist right at the end of each episode gives a reader an insight into what happened after the story albeit in summary. The attention to detail is particularly impressive as the author takes you through the standard operating practice of the police as concerns the different situations they encounter. I have to admit I became better acquainted with what to expect from law officers just from reading this book.
True crime genre readers will definitely enjoy the contents of this book. The stories are detailed and graphic in a way only they would appreciate. Non fiction genre followers will also find this book particularly interesting. If not for anything but for the nuggets of essential information that Darren Burch dishes out in his book
With an eye-catching title and a steady diet of peculiar stories ranging from the mundane to the downright unbelievable, Darren Burch's Twisted But True entertains a reader from start to finish. Some episodes will have you rolling on your sides in pure hysterics while certain chapters will surely get you teary eyed. The combination of these factors and the quality of editing is professional enough to elicit a 4 out of 4 stars rating from me. The true crime stories in this book will leave you with a whole new level of appreciation when people tell you reality can be stranger than fiction.
