The Merkin Chronicles is an intriguing thriller novel by Pygmael Eon featuring Francis Merkin as the main protagonist. Growing up, Francis had no idea who she was. She was the product of the Guild, a large corporate secret organization with the goal to control trade in the world. When the Guild decides they want to take control of the drug trade world as well, they begin a plan that requires the best of the best in operations and assassinations. To do this, they use a genetics scheme to find two individuals with the assassination gene in them, in the hopes that it would be dominant in their offspring.

When Francis is born as a result of the Guild’s perfect planning, she displays not only the desired assassination gene but also the Venus gene. She grows up to be exceptionally beautiful, irresistible and dangerous. She begins operations for the Guild, some involving killing, others involving seduction work, and all to do with the drug world. She becomes a remarkable spy, but even the best of the best have their weaknesses and the book goes on to show what a fun and intriguing character Francis, but even the best of the best can be betrayed.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It had a number of positive points. Firstly, it was suspenseful and captivating. The plot was nicely done and creatively articulated. Secondly, the story was accurate. One of the issues with crime novels of such specific details or areas is that they often have a few inaccuracies due to the author’s lack of experience. However, Pygmael Eon writes from a perspective garnered by his own experiences making the book feel more real and come to life. Thirdly, great prose and storytelling. The story is written in a way that draws the reader in, and the characters are nicely shown, making it possible to fall in with them.

However, the book has a few errors and doesn’t climax well. The story felt a bit stretched during the last fifty or so pages. It may have been better to end it at the previous operation before the one in Paris.

This book would appeal to lovers of thrillers, crime, action and erotic romance. The book has a lot of sex which might make it less appealing to certain readers. All in all, I rate the book a 3 out of 4 stars . I couldn’t give it a 4 because it was not perfectly well-edited and had a few errors, but the book was very enjoyable and deserved a three.
