Review of E M P Honeymoon
Tom and Kelly are on their honeymoon at a tropical beach resort. One day, Kelly visits a local gift shop, where she comes across a dark secret and some suspicious activity. A man notices her interest and chases her down. Kelly escapes before he can get to her. Confused and afraid, she explains her ordeal to her husband, Tom, who is intrigued and wants to learn more about the gift store and why this mysterious man pursued Kelly. Tom investigates, digging deeper into the issue, and finds some disturbing information that doesn't add up. Suspicion leads them to investigate the situation, but they can't do it alone and need the help of Kelly's brother and a team of experts. Together, they uncover a terrifying plot that threatens countless lives and could lead to devastating casualties. Attempting to discover secret plans and racing against the clock, the team must outsmart a group of highly trained terrorists working for a disgruntled dictator willing to stop at nothing until he claims revenge and concurs a nation.
It was a pleasure to listen to Scott Ellis narrate the audiobook, whose voice conveys all the characters and shapes their personalities, flaws, and goals. I enjoyed the fast pace and action scenes in the book, which introduced me to something new and refreshing. Since the book differed from the genres I usually read, I hesitated, but it surprised me and introduced me to a unique style that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although there are a lot of scientific and technological descriptions, I could still follow the story without becoming too enveloped in their meanings.
The story kept my attention, but I lost concentration several times as the plot evolved. In some instances, the scientific explanations and descriptions had me scratching my head. Switching between different characters and perspectives, I felt I had to keep track of their motives and became overwhelmed by information.
Dorothy May Mercer tells a compelling story that is fast-paced, action-packed, and does not lack plot twists. The book piqued my interest in its genre, and I would read another book by the author without hesitation. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars.
I highly recommend E-M-P Honeymoon: Kelly & Tom to young adults and high school students. I don't think elementary school students would understand the scientific, geographic, or political descriptions throughout the book, as I struggled with these at times.
