East Wind by Jack Winnick is a thrilling novel that follows agents Lara and Uri, as they work to save America from the age-old conflict between those of the Jewish and Muslim faiths. The scheme goes deeper than anyone thinks it could. Agents of deception are planted in places no one would ever suspect, while Lara and Uri have to race against the clock to sniff them out and save countless lives from the seemingly endless feud.

I really enjoyed the level of knowledge that Winnick displayed in this novel. At one point, I even wondered, "imagine searching how to make a nuclear weapon on the internet!" Though I don't know anything about bombs or much about weapons, the knowledge was very impressive to me. I also enjoyed the relationship between Lara and Uri and how it developed throughout the story; both agents seemed to have found a kindred spirit in one another.

I have always wondered what would make someone want to be a suicide bomber, and Winnick did an amazing job at setting the stage for how something like that could come to be, especially for children. Charismatic leaders, smooth talkers, and a large following can look glamourous to anyone. Many of the scenarios Winnick played out were quite frightening to me; the gravity of how real the situations could really be set in heavily. The ways in which people could insert themselves into the everyday lives of others and make everyday activities out of the tasks necessary to complete the mission was both fascinating, and again, frightening.

I don't have much to say on the negative side. The descriptions can be a bit lengthy sometimes, to the point where I would have to back pedal and reread to connect all of what was said. I do believe that to be a personal preference more than an actual issue. I am giving this 4 out of 4 stars as my official rating because it is overall a great story.

I would recommend this novel to those with an interest in the conflict in the Middle East and how it affects the lives of the innocent people caught in the crossfires. The reader must be okay with a light bit of romance peppered in. I would recommend for ages teen to middle age. The novel is not overly sexualized and doesn't use foul language. It is a bit graphic and could be triggering for some people, but overall is a great read.
