How much can you trust the tech gadgets you are buying? Richard Nedbal answers this question in his book, Encoded: A Richard Braddock Mystery. Throughout the book, he shows us what powerful and intelligent minds can do if they want to teach one nation a lesson. Richard Braddock, a freshly retired private investigator, who just found a new love, is contacted by the President of US, who happened to study at the same High School. The proposal to find his illegitimate daughter, conceived in Vietnam during the War, is taken very seriously by Richard, who leaves his new love and his home and starts exploring the World in order to help the president. Starting from Vietnam, the place where he never thought he would return after the War, Richard explores all the possibilities and involves all the necessary people, but finding Thi Thom, is harder than he thought. Starting with minimum of information given by the president, the excitement of having something different to do for his retirement, is making Richard to give his all best. What he discovers is bigger than the mission itself and he find himself caught in a global scale attack, having only a few days to solve the problem and free the world from an imminent disaster. Full of unexpected turns, the tech novel leads the reader’s mind through different feelings. Even if for half of the book, the reader can be wondering what is the connection between the first part of the book, where it seems that another story is told, and the rest of the book, understanding AMIP’s plan, everything will make sense.
The combination of soft love, mystery, friendship mixed with revenge, suspense and terrorism, all covered in technology, keeps the reader alert and with every twist in the story, it gives you a hunger that cannot be fulfilled until reaching the end of the book. For me, it was a pleasure reading this book, as I am involved in the IT department, and all the terms and references to the tech domain, transformed this novel in something different and enjoyable, which was a positive aspect.
As a good tech novel is hard to find, this one was an excellent read. The characters were well constructed, and the author gave as many details as necessary for main or secondary characters. The trust between the team and then between Kevin and TJ, was well structured and gradually growing, effect that kept the mystery alive and sealed their work at the end. I enjoyed this Richard Braddock Mystery so much, that I couldn’t find any negative aspects, being overwhelmed by the story of how big can grow a seed of hate and the desire of revenge and the effects of a small error that can occur throughout technology. The questions from the end of the book should everyone to be asking and try to find a good answer.
I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the main idea of the book and the mix of tech terms throughout the whole story. For a lover of both technology and reading, this book is a perfect combination. The whole book answers my first question and gives a good example of how a little microprocessor, that seems harmless, can do great damage to the whole population or how 2 minutes from the atomic clocks can save the whole world.
I am strongly recommending this book to the tech and mystery enthusiasts, but everyone can read it and find it very good and thoughtful, as is an easy reading.
