Have you ever wondered what life as a cop is like? Well, this book gives you the chance to find out! Twisted but True by Darren Burch takes us through the author’s life before he retired as a police officer, and takes us from cases that are hilariously absurd to downright horrifying. It also takes us through the big moments in Darren’s personal life, heart-warming and heartbreaking. All in all, it is an insightful, emotional and hilarious read.

The best thing about this book is, in my opinion, the writing style. Going into the book, I was expecting a stiff, formal writing style, but it turned out to be the exact opposite! Darren makes jokes throughout the book, and had me laughing while reading about people doing atrocious things! Who would’ve thought? I also loved how, despite how informal the writing style was, the book was very educational; I definitely learnt several new things by the end of it. It gave insight not only into the life of a cop, but also life during the 70s and 80s in America, and I enjoyed the contrast between that and life now.

Another thing I thoroughly enjoyed was reading about Darren’s personal life, especially the parts about his kids. I thought they were absolutely heart-warming and they put a smile on my face. I also loved seeing the personal development and growth in the author over the course of the book. He takes us through his life from when he was a teenager, so we can really see how he matured and become more responsible, and how his childhood dream of saving lives came to fruition.

There actually wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book. Readers should just be aware that one or two chapters had detailed accounts of sexual assault, and if that’s not something they want to read about or that might be triggering to them, then they might want to avoid this book, or perhaps look up which chapters had accounts of sexual assault and avoid those specifically. It has quite a bit of swearing as well, so that’s another thing to look out for.

I would recommend this book to everyone, except for people who are triggered by or don’t like reading about sexual assault and death. People who enjoy stories about crime in particular would enjoy it, but it really is a book for everyone, and I believe it would be engaging even for people who don’t typically read about crime.

I rate this book four out of four stars. It was excellently written and I enjoyed every story. I can’t praise this book enough; Burch did an outstanding job with it.
