Passing on the "baton" as any good leader would is a great honor and responsibility. The Sheriff has one picked out already, so that is half the battle he faces in Hands Across the Sea by Brian Cook. As the story starts, the Sheriff has the realization that he might not make it to his retirement (for various reasons), so he must choose a replacement very fast and wisely. Not just anyone can be the next Sheriff.

As the story goes on, one sees the inside workings of the sheriff's department and what makes a good leader. The story has hidden treasures that are not well known to the average "joe". Each and every Deputy is vying for the Sheriff's job, even though they know he already picked one out.

This is for anyone who likes reading autobiographical stories. The book reads like a high school diary from sports players and is very sluggish all the way. If the reader doesn't mind the jockeying for attention and slowness then there should be no problem.

This definitely is not for teens or anyone that has some semblance of morality because of the excessive profanity and immature locker room humor (if it's called humor). It is a very big disappointment considering the title of the book. A reader goes in thinking the story is about something and it turns out to be something completely different and disappointing.

I would give a rating of 2 out of 4 stars due to the amount and type of profanity that distracts from the scenes and the conversations themselves. It was bad even for most modern writings. I did like the fact there was no gratuitous violence or sex, and no grammatical mistakes. For modern writing, I'm very surprised it didn't have an excessive amount of sex.

This is a story for people who like stories about the police system. The book is ok just by itself but too sluggish along the way. If a reader doesn't mind the slowness then there should be no problem.

Unfortunately this is not for teens because of the profanity and the "locker room" bantering between the other deputies. It would be good for a wide range of readers if not for that. It really is an interesting read if not good at all and one can get thoughts away from those flaws.
