David Jackson’s A Walk Through The Grapes, made my heart race. This story follows the protagonist, Jace Grazer who returns home to his family after being away for a while. Since that day, a series of shocking, heart wrenching, and life changing events unfold before the Grazers. Jace is the second oldest of four siblings. His older brother Dane Grazer, his sisters Jen and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Grazer, along with their parents Marie and Robert Grazer, reside in a small town called Willowcreek. Their family home was inherited and has been in the family for years. Together the Grazers go through baffling discoveries, and dire events that threaten the family business, Grazer’s Grapes. As if things were not complicated enough, the revelation of burdening secrets cast a dark shadow, which obscures their vision for their future. Jace goes on a risky mission to get answers to their problems, because he desperately wants to bring back a sense of normalcy to his life, especially since death has peeped its scary head into the window of his family’s life.

The author incorporates flashback in certain chapters to reveal events, which occurred in the lives of the characters. Through this retrospective view, most times relayed through the protagonist, readers are able to piece the entire narrative together. The characters are almost 3D (three dimensional) because many of their thoughts and actions revealed through the dialogue, carry a certain human and life-like quality. Their experiences are relatable to anyone who’s had to deal with real life hardships.

Jace could have avoided certain setbacks, however his decisions added to the book’s dramatic effect in a wonderful way. I also enjoyed the author’s use of language. His choice of opening-lines in each chapter was thought provoking and refreshing to read. My heart really pounded in my chest when I read certain chapters. I felt annoyed, worried, angry, frustrated, and sympathetic towards the characters’ circumstances. I knew then that this was a really good book because I was engrossed and it evoked many profound emotions in me. A Walk Through The Grapes contains a well-balanced mixture of crime, romance, drama and mystery elements.

Editorial errors are the only negative aspect that I found in this book. For example the spelling error, in chapter 20, on page 290 in the line “ “This can’t really be happening” Jace said under his breathe.” ” made me cringe a little and interrupted my reading flow. Overall, I had a great time reading this book and for that reason, I rate A Walk Through The Grapes 3 out of 4 stars.

A Walk Through The Grapes is suitable for a mature audience because it contains some sensual scenes and I recommend it to anyone who loves stories teeming with family dilemmas and mysteries. The unavoidable horrors of crime in the air, as well as lover's squabbles are definitely aspects this book does not lack.
