Review of Soul Seeker
Crighton is tall, dark, handsome, and also happens to be Lucifer’s top Soul Seeker in Hell. Oftentimes, he is sent out on missions to collect the souls of wicked individuals and Angels for Lucifer’s consumption. He loves being assigned hefty tasks, thriving on the suffering of others. Hesitation isn’t in Crighton’s vocabulary while on his missions, until he stumbles across Ariel. A Guardian Angel in-training, she accompanies a more seasoned Angel on a task to help a group of humans who were in a car accident. While distracted, Crighton seizes the opportunity to pounce, grabbing a hold of Ariel while the other disappears into thin air. Upon this encounter, he recognizes his feelings toward this particular Angel are different from how he feels toward others of her kind. This curiosity leads the two to learn that they are soulmates, despite their incredibly opposite lifestyles. Ariel and Crighton fight through not only their differences, but from the demons sent out by Lucifer to break up their bond. Following them on their adventure, Crighton and Ariel prove that two worlds can collide and create something beautiful.
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren has several positive points that made it an enjoyable read. While initially under the pretense of a thriller, the story unfolds to include strong undernotes of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance as well. Embedded in these genres are incredibly strong characters exhibiting raw human personality traits. While Ariel (Crighton’s soulmate) is witty and outgoing, yet short tempered and strong willed, Crighton himself is impulsive, hotheaded, and nonchalant. The clashing and melding of these two starkly different individuals is intense, yet adds dimension to the story. Along with character development comes the hearty theme of opposites settling their differences and coming together as one. I felt moved by this because in reading specific feelings and emotions portrayed by both Ariel and Crighton, I could instantly relate this back to my personal relationship with my significant other.
To add, the plot was incredibly unique in that it was something I’d never read about. A lot of thrillers focus on common themes i.e. serial killers, murderers, etc., but this particular read approached a more inventive topic of Heaven, Hell, and the creatures that reside in both. Descriptions of both places were so well written, I could picture myself physically there. From the smells described, to the feeling of the weather, McFarren provides you with feelings of nostalgia (when referring to the frigidity of winter or the strong smell of coffee in the morning). It was, without a doubt, a cover-to-cover read that captivated me from the get go. I was so enthralled with the whole book, that I can’t find anything negative about it.
I’d recommend this book to mature audiences due to explicit sexual content and strong religious undertones. If you’re also a fan of books that are a kind of catch all for a multitude of genres, I’d give this one a read. The only potential setback in regard to the recommendation of this novel may be the religious content as mentioned above. If anyone is sensitive to the notions of Heaven and Hell, I’d strongly suggest possibly finding another book to read.
I’m happy to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There were few grammatical and spelling errors, leading me to believe it was professionally edited. Also, the real life situations and feelings the characters experienced really resonated with me in a way that I could relate to. I’m almost grateful I had picked up this book thinking it was a thriller, as I would have never thought to gravitate toward it solely on the premises of fantasy or romance. I want to thank McFarren for opening my eyes to the beauty of other genres and look forward to future reads!
