Lara Edmond is an FBI agent specializing in electronic terrorism traffic. Uri Levin is a Special Operations agent with the Israeli Mossad, highly experienced in undercover fieldwork. Together the two are tasked with going undercover on what seems like a suicide mission in the wake of a terrorist nuclear attack on American soil. Following the attack, a terrorist organization in the Middle East released a chilling letter to the United States government with a deadly and terrifying ultimatum. Lara and Uri are in a race against time to determine who was behind the Los Angeles bombing, where their next target will be, and ultimately, to stop them once and for all.

East Wind by Jack Winnick is the first in Mr. Winnick’s Lara and Uri series. Mr. Winnick demonstrates his extensive knowledge of history and the political climate in the Middle East in many of his novels, and this one is no exception. His expertise in the fields of chemical and nuclear engineering is also evident in his detailing of the homemade nuclear weapons the terrorists create in this story, giving East Wind a layer of reality that takes this novel a step above the average crime thriller.

I enjoyed this book very much. The plot grabbed my attention from the heart-stopping nuclear bombing in the first few pages and continued to captivate me through the following chapters as the author so thoroughly divulged the background of each of the characters involved in the story. Mr. Winnick does an excellent job of portraying the emotions and inner thinking of both the terrorists and the agents. As a reader, I felt like I had a front-row seat in the minds of the terrorists as they plotted their next heinous plan of destruction.

While there was not anything I disliked about the book, there were moments that I found the timeline difficult to follow. This did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the book, however. There is also a good deal of violence in the plot, and I even found myself cringing at times, but considering the genre of this novel, this is expected, and I found little cause for objection.

I enthusiastically recommend East Wind to anyone willing to take on an exciting espionage thriller that they won’t be able to put down! This book contains edge-of-your-seat action, international espionage, undercover spies, horrifying terrorist plots, and even a touch of romance. It was clearly edited professionally, as I found only a couple of minor punctuation errors. There were some minor instances of borderline profanity and a brief moment of an erotic scene, making this novel more appropriate for mature readers. Overall though, I give this fast-paced, heart-pumping novel four out of four stars.
