Review of The Attuned
The Attuned by Gary B. Haley is a science fiction novel that throws the reader in the midst of action and chaos right from the get-go. Later, the narrative takes the reader from snowy mountains to the sandy Middle East.
The story follows a follows an agent on the run who ends up alone in a foreign country without any of the necessary documents. He needs to reach his home in America but that goal is but a hopeless pursuit. The agent's only help in his mission is the set of abilities he has that save him from danger countless times. Eventually, he finds someone else who has similar abilities. However, a bond marked by heartbreak does not last long.
The story is engaging, filled with actions, suspense, and adventure. I was always curious about those abilities the main character pulls out every so often. The cast of characters was also intriguing, both foes and friends. It was a good read that kept me turning the pages. It carries a message of hope and perseverance, loyalty, and friendship.
There was nothing about the book that I particularly disliked, however, that might be different for readers with a low tolerance for cliff-hangers. This book has many of those at often inopportune timings. Right as the action and suspense are in full swing, the reader has torn away and the narrative for another character begins. Loose ends get tied eventually, but this type of story-telling technique isn't for everyone.
I recommend this novel to anyone who likes a dynamic adventurous story with a good dose of danger. The story is not very heavy on the sci-fi aspect of it so if you're looking for something more sci-fi heavy then this isn't for you. Mind the cliffy narrative! I would not recommend this book to readers who dislike cliff-hangers, especially regularly appearing ones. You do have to wait to get to the resolution of conflicts.
All in all, this was a good book. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars because it is well-written and well-edited. I did not notice any errors and the characters are well-established, although none of them made me fall in love or leave a mark. The story is engaging, fun and easy to read. I do not give it 4 stars because I prefer to reserve my full ratings for books I will be reading again and again.
