The book Twisted but True by Police Sergeant Darren Burch is a crime/thriller. The book follows him in his 28 years of service. It is narrated in the first-person point of view and follows Darren’s perspective.

The book starts with Darren as a teenager. One day as Darren and his friends were driving, they become witnesses to a horrific accident. It was a life altering episode for them. It changed the course of his life. It is during this event that he realizes that he wants to help the people around him. So, he joins the army and later becomes a police officer. He goes ahead to explain many instances in his police career. Some of these instances are hilarious while some are gruesome. This book also has a chapter based on the Serial Shooters. He explains, briefly, how he was involved in the investigation, even before it became the Serial Shooters case. Each story, in the book, has a twist that you will not see coming. A few of these twists also include how the incident affected him or what he learnt from it.

The aspects that I liked about the book were that it was based on a cop’s life. I enjoy crime stories and reading a book about various crimes that happened, and how he responded to each of these situations was uplifting. Another aspect that I liked was that the book gave me an insight to how the police department works. It puts forth the difficult task of being a police officer. He has used dark humor in the book, that made a lot of embarrassing incidents hilarious.

There were no aspects of the book I did not like.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This book felt more like an autobiography to me with a twist in it. I really enjoyed reading the officers thoughts and emotions during every incident. At the end of every incident, I was eager to see what the twist was. The book had everything I wanted from a good thriller. The book was well edited as I found no errors.

I would recommend this book to those who like to read thrillers and crime stories. I would also recommend it to those who like biographies. As this book is written by the police officer, himself, it does feel like an autobiography even though it mainly focuses on his career. The book has profanity and sexual content. Trigger warning: at times the author gets into details of a particular murder or corpse. These details are gruesome.
