Unknown Vengeance, written by Patrick O’Brien, is a crime thriller about two detectives, Rhody and Jon. The story starts with Rhody and Jon investigating a rather disturbing and gruesome set of murders. As the investigation makes no headway, they seek the help of a psychologist. This psychologist sheds light on what kind of a person could commit these crimes. As the weeks pass, there are more and more murders, all surrounding doctors and all involving a poem written by an unknown source. The more answers they discover the more questions appear. Why is this person killing these people? Will the detectives catch the killer?

This novel is very interesting, not only the storyline but also O’Brien’s writing style. The story is being told by multiple different people. From the detectives’ point of view, the “predator”, and Paul. All of these characters are of equal importance to the story, without one there would not be a story at all. With reading from all these perspectives, the reader gets to delve into the minds of the killer, Paul, and the detectives. This gives the reader an inside knowledge that makes the story more intriguing.

Despite this being a well-written story, there were also some negative aspects to it. The biggest negative aspect is the fact that there were many grammatical errors. It was clear that this novel was not professionally edited and because of this, it takes away from the rest of the story. I ended up focusing so much on the errors that it took a minute to understand what it was telling me.

I recommend this novel to those who enjoy crime stories or, more specifically, murder mysteries. This also includes fans of Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Closure, etc. However, there is considerable detailed violence and disturbing actions, because of this I do not recommend this novel to children under the age of 18.

I would rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars. There is plenty of action to keep you on your toes. There is a constant mystery that keeps you wondering what is happening. There is an endless amount of emotions being expressed that make you feel like you are the characters experiencing what they are experiencing. However, I did take one star away because of the grammatical mistakes. Overall, Unknown Vengeance is a fast-paced novel that will keep you guessing on what happens next.
