The book: Mixed Blessings by J. M. Muse is a book which strongly deals with racism. The book revolves around various people who are living in America and how they deal with racism. The book is written in an alternate reality, which mainly deals with the statement, “What if Martin Luther King and Malcom X had never existed?” This book mainly follows Minister Kublai Khan. It has multiple perspectives and is narrated in first person perspective.

In this book, you see Kimberly who is mixed/mocha baby, her mother is a Jewish American and father is a Mexican who married into a wealthy family. Her visit to Mexico may not be the best but she learns to move forward and search for the love of her life. She stumbles across Ahmed, a black American and a believer of House of Jeremiah. Minister Kublai Khan the head of The House of Jermiah, plays an important role in Ahmed’s life. Kublai being a man of color, decides that he is going to fight for the rights of his people. He is willing to go to any extent to help his people. You see him working with Chaka, a woman of color as well. He also, meets up with people of different races so that they can have a united front. Kublai devises some strong plans to make sure that the people of color get the respect and status they deserve. Also, Star, a Japanese American, signs up for a beauty pageant. Her aunt has won the pageant and wishes for her to be the next Queen. Star struggles with other contestants to leave her mark.

The aspects that I liked about this book was that it dealt with racism. Some instances seen in the book reminded a lot of recent events of racism. The book has multiple perspectives which allows me to see the incidents from the characters point of view.

The aspects of the book that I did not like were that there were too many perspectives. I really enjoy multiple perspectives but, in this book, there were so many that at times I couldn’t understand whose perspective I was reading. Also, there were characters that I did not understand their connection to the main plot.

I rate this book two out of four stars. The synopsis was intriguing but the book did not live up to my expectations. Also, at the end of the book I was very confused as to what happened in the book.

I would recommend this book to people who like alternate reality. This book is based in a world where Martin Luther King and Malcom X did not exist. Also, this book has religion as one of the main aspects. It doesn’t relate to any religion, in particular. Trigger warning: white supremacy, racism, abuse, and bloodshed. This book has profanity and sexual content.
