Review of E M P Honeymoon
E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer is a crime fiction based on individuals racing against the clock to stop energy-fueled terrorist attacks. Our main protagonists are a newly married couple that finds themselves thrust into the middle of a dangerous conspiracy during their honeymoon vacation on a beautiful island off the coast of Honduras. Kelly, the female protagonist, stumbled upon a terrorist group during a sightseeing escapade in the back of a shop called the pigsty. After narrowly escaping capture, she hurriedly informs her brother, the senator, and her superintendent husband of the predicament she found herself in. These situations brought about the collaboration of various government groups that would make up the team.
While listening to the audiobook, a few things jumped out to me. Firstly, the chapters flowed pretty well. Scott Ellis, the narrator, identified the change in chapters: making it easier to keep up with the story. His pronunciation was spot on and allowed me, as the reader, to understand each word clearly. The narrator was able to utilize various methods of speech like tone and cadence, to ensure that the voice-over was not dull and monotone. The writing remained chronological for the most part and did not skip over impactful moments.
Secondly, the writing was descriptive, which allowed me to immerse myself in the story and imagine what was going on. The female protagonist was women empowerment done right. She was strong in her own right and very clever. She did not hold the group back and did not overpower the group. The action dynamic between husband and wife was well-constructed. Both depended on each other to see-through issues. The author did not just tell the audience how skillful Kelly was but showed her awesomeness through her actions and decisions.
Finally, the narrator used some unique elements throughout the audiobook. Whenever a character was on the phone, the person on the other line would sound more staticky, making it seem more realistic. Background noises were also laced throughout the story during impactful moments to immerse the listener into the experience.
On the other hand, the vocal impressions of the females within the story sometimes fell flat, and the distinction was hard to tell. Also, the narrator tried to show the emotions through his voice, but it did not resonate with me at times. The urgency of the situation and the narrator's voice did not line up at times. The story missed elements of romance between the couple as it jumped straight into the action. At points, it was unrealistic that a newlywed couple would spend so much time apart during their honeymoon. Lastly, the writer introduced numerous characters, making it gruesome to keep up as the story became jumbled.
I would rate this audiobook a 3 out of 4 stars. The story was interesting, and some of the characters were likable. However, at times it felt like the story dragged on, which caused my interest to wane. There were also a few errors in the program that I found distracting.
I would recommend this book to individuals 13 and up. At that age, they should have the understanding needed to keep up with the storyline. Those who have a keen interest in Electromagnetic pulses and solar energy would also find this book intriguing.
