Review by Elendu Clement -- My Only Sunshine
My Only Sunshine by Lou Dischler is a book that revolves around family culture. The book tells us about the tremendous effect one's family background could have on them, how it could be positive or adverse. The book also exhibits what pure love meant in the way that Charlie cared for his brother, Jute.
Charlie and Jute were both catered for by their grandparents after the dismissal of their parents. Their Dad was arrested for a robbery attempt which wasn't successful and only ended up blowing his finger away. They were told by their grandparents that their Mama was blown up to heaven by a hurricane. They were both surprised to see their Uncle, Dan, who was locked up. He came back home with a strange-looking woman, who he later introduced to them as Lona. Dan and Lona sold adult-rated books with Bible coatings to churches; They were soon found out, though they managed to get away luckily without being killed. In a bid to make money they resorted to robbing a bank. Things happened very quickly at the bank; they made away with the money, but they were soon on the chase. Grab a copy of this book to find out what was later the fate of the duo.
The book is very intriguing, it took away my attention from everything I was doing. It is one of the best books have read on the internet that portrays family culture. The fact that the author didn't use an actual protagonist made me like the book the more. Charles and Jute at first thought they were going to be flogged by their grandparents for digging up a hole. Little did they know that they were about to change the financial status of their family. They had dug up a lake of salt worth millions of dollar. Dan and Lona's lifestyle harmed the life of little Charlie. For instance, Charlie believed that if he smoked cigarettes, it would toughen his lungs. Charlie family reputation also affected him in school, everyone believed that he will turn out to be like his Uncle or Dad.
The book had too many irrelevant things that could make a reader tired and bored from reading. The author tried to create too much suspense which I don't fancy. I think he should be straightforward next time to make the book more brief and interesting. Aside from that, the author did every other thing well. The plot was well developed. The characters well developed. I like the fact the author wrote the book from two perspective view; one view from Charlie and the other from his Uncle.
I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited. The book contains minor profanity. The author did a nice job in highlighting the importance of patience in this book. The book also had a lot of humour attached to it. I recommend this book to lovers of stories associated with thriller and comedy.
