Review by Caleb 044 -- My Only Sunshine by Lou Dischler
The book My Only Sunshine by Lou Dischler falls under the category of fictional novels. In the book, we follow the life of a boy named Charlie and that of members of his family. He stays with his grandparents, his little brother Jute and Uncle Dan, who had just escaped from prison. They all live in the Red Church community. Uncle Dan is one shady person and mostly his schemes land him into trouble with the law enforcement. Charlie’s father had been imprisoned and the mum, we are told she was swallowed by a hurricane. Their family has a long history of criminals and Charlie doesn’t mind going to jail or juvenile.
Like most children his age, Charlie hates school so much and always longed for the Holidays to come. He said that he learned a lot from his Uncle Dan, and he saw no need to go to school. This is because sometimes when he asks the teacher a question or tells her what is on his mind, he is sometimes reprimanded. Uncle Dan, on the other hand, has answers to all questions. For example, When Charlie asked him why he enjoyed smoking, he told him that cigarettes make someone’s chest stronger and so Charlie smoked so that he could get the strength to beat his bully. Throughout the book Charlie is introduced to new aspects of life, for example girls and many other things.
What I liked the most about the book is its plot. The story was very engaging from the start, and I just wanted to know what would happen on the next page. I liked how the author has used language wisely in the book. Lou Dischler incorporates different aspects of styles such as vivid description, humor, and diction. For example, the sentence, ”… you remember that bank guard you shot, he expired this morning,” this is to mean, he died. I also liked how the author has brought out the character Charlie. He is very adventurous, he knows what he wants, and he is ready to speak his mind at all times. While reading this book, I found myself laughing, at how clueless Charlie was and how confused he seemed.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. The editing of this book was flawless hence I did not find any typos, spelling errors or grammatical error.
I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This is because, according to me, everything was perfect, starting from the plot to characterization and other stylistic aspects. The author uses simple language and hence it was very easy to understand the book. There was some use of profane language. I would recommend this book to older teenagers and adults who love novels incorporated with fiction and comedy.
