Review by Chantelle G -- Legacy by Chris Coppel
When an unexpected gift arrives, no one could have guessed what horrors would follow. Though beautiful, the antique mirror holds an unforgiving mystery, or so it seems. The strange events that follow its appearance don’t help matters. All Craig wants to do is protect his family, but he has no idea what that means, or how haunting the past can be. When he finds himself facing something beyond what he’s willing to believe, he’s forced to rely on skills he’d rather forget. With only one shot, and an old man with a story that’s hard to swallow, he’s willing do whatever it takes, whenever that may be.
Chris Coppel’s Legacy is quick paced and delivers a compelling protagonist. With great flow, it’s easy to accidentally read more than intended when first cracking open this thriller. Though stories that incorporate time travel can be frustrating when it just doesn’t make sense, Coppel managed to do so in a way that was easy to understand. The reaction of the characters to such a phenomenon was relatable as well and helped solidify its relevance to the story.
There were so many details that brought this world to life. I found both the story and its characters believable. I even got so caught up in Craig’s journey that I found myself getting mad on his behalf and rejoicing at the smallest victories. I was impressed with the way Coppel wove in flashbacks and relevant information in an intriguing way that both entertained and tugged at my heartstrings.
It’s obvious that this author did his research to bring this story and its characters to life, however, certain grammatical errors broke the flow for me. That was the only real grievance I noticed while reading. I found myself mentally editing the story as I read, which meant I wasn’t as immersed in the story as it deserved. It’s easy to overlook a few misplaced or neglected commas, but the overuse or repetition of pronouns to begin sentences detracted from an otherwise interesting read.
I would give Legacy a 3 out of 4 stars. Though well paced, it didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat as much as I’d been expecting. Despite the characters being relatable, the climax fell short. As well, there were many errors, especially when it came to the formatting of paragraphs, that made me believe the book had not been properly edited, particularly in the second half. Another round of editing would do wonders for this fantastic story.
Though I say there were things I didn’t enjoy, my overall experience reading Legacy was a good one. Though fantasy is my go-to genre, thrillers and horrors are like my guilty pleasure reads. This one was well worth the read and I’m glad to have discovered it.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good thriller without the horror factor. There are some profanities, and it does touch on subjects like child abuse and PTSD, so I would recommend this book to mature readers.
