Review by sabbykitty -- House of Dads by June Gillam
House of Dads by June Gillam is the 2nd book in the Hillary Broome Novels. Hillary Broome is a journalist that assisted in solving a series of murders that took place in book one. Now, she’s got bigger issues to face: the death of two of her family members and her marriage to the love of her life, Ed. With the death of all male heirs over the age of 18, the running of Broome Construction falls to Hillary’s cousin Violet, and she intends to keep her new job at any cost. Violet’s mother is determined to wrest control of the company away from her through underhanded tactics. When she discovers that Violet’s father had an affair with the maid and a love child exists, that throws a wrench in Violet’s plans that she corrects through unconventional means. Hillary needs to make sure Violet doesn’t take any drastic measures while also trying to keep her family from falling apart.
The book was clear and concise in its organization and writing style. The author writes each chapter from a different character’s point of view which I found tricky, but she pulled it off quite well. The pacing of the plot was excellently done and the events that occurred within were believable and fit in. The writing didn’t feel forced at all and flowed well together. The characters were very believable and I found that I enjoyed Violet and Hillary’s personalities the most. Hillary was trying to learn more about her family and was worried about Violet, and Violet wanted nothing more than to achieve her dream and keep it. I found myself rooting for Violet to succeed.
While the plot flowed well, the story wasn’t what I was expecting. Considering book 1 involved Hillary helping to solve a series of murders, I was expecting something similar in this story. The suspense wasn’t in the fact there was a killer on the loose, but rather if murder would occur. The climax of the book had little to no action, and I was a bit disappointed in that.
House of Dads is well written and a great addition to the Hillary Broome Novels series. It is professionally edited and has few errors. I give it 4 out of 4 stars. Reading it was enjoyable and I want to pick up the rest of the books in the series now. I have a bit of emotional investment in Hillary as a character and want to see how she grows and evolves through the series.
This book is a good introduction for someone who is looking to get into the genre of mystery/suspense. It’s short, a pleasure to read, and the plot is easy to follow. Due to some cursing and implied romantic content, this book is best suited for an adult audience. Young adults may also find it a good book to read as well. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get their feet wet in the mystery genre.
