Jack Winnick’s East Wind is a very exciting tale of an attempted terrorist attack against the United States. This attack was thoroughly planned out by a Jihadist group known as Hezbollah. The fate of the United States is left in the hands of Lara Edmond, an American special agent, and Uri Levin, a master spy of Israel. These two agents are sent out into the field to hunt down many middle-eastern terrorists who are pretending to be living the American dream as foreign college students. As teenagers, these future martyrs are led to believe that assisting in such acts of martyrdom would earn them a spot in eternal paradise.

Winnick takes us through the years of planning involved in the attack, and then also, the several months that it took for the United States' government to figure out to prevent it. We get a glimpse into the lives of these terrorists and how they came to be. One young man, in particular, Walid, tells of his inner demons and the strides it took in order to seal his fate in Paradise. It is up to him to destroy as many American lives as he can without the pressure of the task destroying him.

The most appealing thing about this novel is that we are told the story through the viewpoints of the terrorists themselves. I personally have never read a warfare novel from this viewpoint. This detail alone enhanced the climax of the storyline. Winnick also shared many educational opportunities as well. Most people do not know about the lifestyles of a Jihadist. Throughout this book, readers are taught about their religious views and then also about the substantial amount of time it takes for them to complete their fate of martyrdom. Readers are also taught many tactics that are used by government officials in locating these possible terrorists.

There were not any low points in this novel. It was very well edited and grammatically correct. The storyline was perfectly laid out, providing suspense from the first page to the very last. With this in mind, I would rate East Wind a four out of four stars.

For all of the history enthusiasts out there, East Wind is the perfect book. Although this novel is fictional, there were many true historical events described such as the attack on 09/11 and Hiroshima. I would recommend this particular novel be limited to mature audiences. The detailed events of warfare such as the making of bombs, may not be for our younger population. There are a couple of sexual scenes as well. For adults, this book is a wonderful, educational, and thrilling piece of work.

Winnick seems to be very knowledgeable about the topics in his books. This series isn’t for me, but I appreciate his work. Thank you for a great review!
