When you dwell in this village, along the seaside in Scotland, it's pretty safe to say that the locals know each other very well. This wee community is generally quiet, with the occasional newcomer stirring up gossip and suspicion amongst the locals. If you live where small minds wander, rumours, judgments, and opposing beliefs fly around like swallows chasing insects on a summer breeze. In Scotland, fairytales and myths run amok, with some people believing in magical creatures and ghosts, while others believe that rational explanations can be used to make sense of all strange occurrences. Billy McArdle is a man who doesn't believe in ghosts or legends, however, after witnessing a seriously strange and terrifying event, he might just change his mind. Now he's in trouble with a dangerous gang of low-lives, for whom he was doing some less than legal work. His only chance is to team up with someone he would never before have considered to be an ally. In the past Detective Inspector, Jack Munro, once let his biggest quarry slip through his fingers. Now, however, his adversary is back, and this time kilts will fly before Jack lets him get away again. The name of the game is danger! Better watch your step, because it's around every corner.

I found Breakers by Barry Litherland, to be an exciting, creative, and thrilling tale. Several stories are being told, that all come together in an exhilarating conclusion at the end. It was pleasing to me, that each chapter in the book is told by a different character, I feel it adds a more personal touch to each of their experiences. The figures themselves, are all well-constructed with strong personalities, which only added to my overall enjoyment while reading. My favorite thing about this brilliant work of fiction, is the epic use of Scottish wit, cleverly incorporated by the author from start to finish.

My one complaint is that the beginning chapters did not flow as easily as the rest of the book. Therefore, you might miss some important details if you are the type of reader, who likes to skim the pages, which may affect your understanding of the outcome. This plot requires your full attention. Because of a few typographical errors, I found in the writing, I do not think that it was professionally edited. Nevertheless, these minor flaws were not enough to put me off the rest of the story, I still consider this to be a book worth it's salt.

I would recommend this written work, to readers who have a taste for novels with a dark, chilling, and mysterious theme throughout. I do not recommend this book, to readers who like stories that are light and fluffy. The genre of this publication falls under the category /C/T/M/H. Sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns are as rare as a Scotsman without his whiskey in this tale.

I am content to give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I would, have given it a full score if there had been no errors within the text. For example, the word ''crumbing,'' was used instead of ''crumbling.'' Despite the mistakes, it was still excellent and I would be happy to read it again.
