Review by amahstone -- The Millionaire's Cross by Sal Nudo
What would you be willing to do for $5 million? The Millionaire's Cross by Sal Nudo explores this question as three men are presented with an opportunity to make a fortune. The story follows Alex Neitzel, a copywriter, his younger brother, Trevor, and Trevor’s boyfriend, Chad. After picking up Trevor and Chad from the bus station, Alex’s car breaks down on the highway near a cemetery, where an old man is visiting his son’s grave.
The old man, David Kendrick, offers them $50 each to mail a letter to a friend in Florida. The men are understandably skeptical at first but agree to do it. David tells them that he has more opportunities for them to make money if they meet him at the cemetery again. The three are conflicted and wary of David’s intentions, but decide to go anyway to make some money. When they meet again, David offers them $5 million to kill his wife, who he claims is gravely ill.
The premise intrigued me, and Nudo did not disappoint. I was immediately hooked. He wastes no time in beginning the story. This story is a compelling character exploration of just how motivating money can be. We see three men go from being unwilling to kill someone for money to taking extreme actions to avoid splitting the money between them. While the two brothers in the story grow closer because of their newfound wealth, their relationship also takes a dark and devastating turn.
I really enjoyed how the author dealt with their changing motivations through the book. In the beginning, they had admirable reasons for wanting the money. Their mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and the money would go a long way in paying for her treatment. Alex and his wife, Emily, are struggling with infertility and are the money would help pay for in-vitro fertilization. However, these initial motivations are put on the backburner as other desires become a higher priority.
Overall, I would give The Millionaire's Cross a rating of 4 out of 4. I noticed no errors and was very entertained throughout. The author does not waste characters or storylines. Ideas that were initially introduced and that I had forgotten about were brought back. Everything came full circle. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers. This story has several twists and turns. This book is best suited for adult readers, as there is profanity, sexual content, and mature themes throughout. I found nothing to dislike about this book. I am excited to see what else Sal Nudo has in store for us as he continues his writing career.
