Bad Karma by Debi Chesnut begins with the mysterious death of Zoey Callaway’s uncle. After moving to the town where her uncle met his demise, Zoey learns that her uncle Felix was on the verge of uncovering the truth about a series of murders. Taking up where her uncle left off, Zoey begins to investigate the unusual and mysterious deaths in the generally quiet town of Hope Harbor. With the help of several members of the police force and a few neighbors, Zoey tries to piece together the mystery her uncle was trying to solve. But in a small town such as this, secrets don’t stay secrets for long, and soon Zoey has dangerous encounters of her own. The twists and turns of the plot, as well as the “, chill up your spine” moments, keep readers persistently sitting on the edge of their seats.

I found this book to be very intriguing and was surprised to find that I could not predict the ending. The mystery is kept up throughout the book excellently, via the writer dropping hints that lead the reader to believe the killer could be anybody and everybody. By incriminating so many of the characters by one suspicious act or another, the writer was able to keep me wondering until the very end.

My one qualm about this book is the ending, which seemed a bit rushed. I won’t go into further details for the sake of keeping the mystery of the story, but I felt like throughout most of the book everything was well thought out; the reader is continually speculating with the main character about who the killer is. When I reached the ending though, it seemed a bit too easy. I think I was expecting more from the author based on the rest of the story, but the conclusion left me dissatisfied.

My overall rating for this book is 3 out of 4 stars. There were a few grammatical errors that contribute to this rating, but the main reason for this rating is the ending wasn’t all I hoped it could be. As explained above, I found the ending to be less thoughtful and well done as compared to the rest of the book.

I would recommend this book to any adult that is interested in mystery novels. I believe Bad Karma to be suitable for older children, but descriptions of the murder scenes might frighten younger youths.
