Official Review: Tulum Takedown by Jeanine Kitchel
Tulum Takedown by Jeanine Kitchel is a thrilling story about a Cartel member, Layla, who turns herself into a detective as she ventures on a mission that might be too much for her. How will this affect her reputation if it all comes out? Will Layla be able to complete her mission successfully?
This is an interesting book that is dedicated to the Mexican journalists who risked their lives trying to tell the truth. The writing style keeps you captivated and on the edge of your seat. The book is full of surprises and unpredictable twists. Kitchel did a wonderful job with the character's development and keeping the reader interested. This is the second book in the series: A Wheels Up Yucatán Thriller this book can be read on its own. Reading the first book is not a necessity. There is enough information provided to let the reader know what the character went through in the first book and to help them understand her reasoning and choices in the second book.
What I liked most about the book is the female protagonist who has great morals and won't allow herself to be changed by any guy. I liked that a few Spanish words were thrown into the text. It was just enough to engage the reader while ensuring that the non-Spanish readers would not get lost or lose the point of the story. The theme of the book is what captured my attention, as it is someone who puts her personal life aside to try and prevent something that happened to her from happening to someone else. It truly is captivating.
There was just one thing I did not like about this book, and that is a mistake that was made in one of the chapters. At the beginning of that chapter, they talked about one girl, Gabrielle, who could help find someone. A few sentences later, this Gabrielle turns into Sylvia, with Sylvia being the girl that is missing in the first place. I read that part a few times over to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. It was disappointing to find that this well-edited book had this glaring mistake.
I rate Tulum Takedown 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the book; it was well written and jam-packed with action and surprises. The writing style is captivating, and I couldn’t put the book down. There was one minor spelling error, and I am deducting one star because of the part where the characters were mixed up, which made that one page unpleasant to read. Apart from that, it is a really good book. Readers that enjoy action thrillers and spy stories will enjoy this book. I highly recommend you put this book on your wishlist. You would not be wasting your time.
