Review by _khush_p -- Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren
Written by Kaylin McFarren, Soul Seeker is a heavenly mixture of genres, namely: thriller, paranormal, fantasy and romance. I have to admit that although this is a classic cliché, reading it was so much fun. The book revolves around Crighton Daemonium, a demon-cum-soul catcher, serving his master of Hell, Lucifer. Soul Seeker is packed with explosions, the good and the bad kind. A good read for mystery and fiction lovers, especially angel and demon fiction lovers.
The story begins with Benjamin Poe and his distressed family. On the verge of a divorce, Poe desperately tries to save his family from falling apart, unaware of the agony waiting for him. The said agony visits him in the form of Crighton, the catcher of wicked souls, who had rewarded Earth by his presence to collect the soul of Poe’s son who might have been involved in a destructive fire in the town of Lochton. Crighton returns to his world after finishing his business and here starts the real story. More light is shed on Crighton’s life in Hell which helps in developing his character. Crighton is given the task to catch an angel, where both the angel and Crighton get trapped together by an organization researching on inhumane beings. There, they both learn about a strange bond they share and succeed in escaping together. Hereafter, a plethora of secrets get unveiled giving the book a complicated twist.
The thing I loved about this book is the story. It’s quite impressive seeing someone’s vivid imagination converted into a book and being able to read it. The author has put extra efforts in the dialogues and it shows. I loved the interactions between the characters and the flawless skill of the author to deliver the story through dialogues was wonderful to experience. There are so many mysteries, it was sensational to uncover them all through the story.
Now, talking about the things I didn’t like. Firstly, there was a lot of disconnection. It felt like so much was being said without even having a legit reason for it. I feel like a big part of the book was occupied by just character building and backstory. The language also confused me a bit, on various occasions I had to re-read paragraphs to get the meaning. The story of Benjamin Poe was highlighted so much, that I got the idea that he is the main protagonist. Only to later find out the book is mainly about Crighton. There are some typos I could find. Like on page no. 3, ‘plexiglass’ being spelled as ‘plexiglas’ and on page no. 26, ‘you’re’ being spelled as ‘your.’ Despite these errors, the rest of the book seemed professionally edited. The book also has cursing and erotic scenes which might be inappropriate for some. Personally, I enjoyed it, as it supported the nature of the characters.
In conclusion, I had fun reading the book and loved it too, but there’s still space for improvement. It was a beautiful reminder of all the cliché romance and fantasy books I used to be obsessed with. I would definitely recommend this book for romance and fantasy lovers. I rate Soul Seeker a 2 out of 4 stars. I find the story impressively overpowering the flaws I mentioned, but I feel the need to deduct stars for the confusion, errors and the lack of connection through the changes in plot. Loved it, nonetheless.
