Make Me Tick by Nick Carr is a short novel of just fourteen chapters. Jim Kirby is a literal hero for Jo Smith. He runs into her fire-blazed apartment just to save her life, while risking his own. Jo makes his heroic action harder by kicking, screaming and trying to break free as he drags her to safety. Regardless of her aggressive behaviour, Jim finds himself drawn to her. Jim is recognised as her hero, however, Jo shows her appreciation with sarcastic remarks. Jim also allows Jo to stay with him as her apartment and her belongings had been ruined. Since the fire could have been due to an arson attack, Inspector Danforth and Sergeant Miller were looking into the outbreak.

I believe the author has successfully written a thriller story with slight humour and fun characters. I was hooked from the very beginning of the book and was engaged till the end. Due to how short the story was, I was able to finish it quickly. This was a little disappointing, but I was pleased to know that there is another book which continues with the same characters.

What I enjoyed most about the book was how spontaneous Jo was. She often surprised me with what she did or said. Furthermore, the story-line was great and the characters had fascinating personalities. There was never a dull moment with these characters; once you pick the book up, you will not put it down until it is finished.

There were some things I disliked in the book. I came across a number of mistakes such as missing capital letters, full stops and common punctuation errors. This can be overlooked once you get into the story, however, it was a let-down. The author also is very fond of using ellipses which seemed to be overwhelming for me. However, I was too busy enjoying the book to let this disturb my reading.

I would recommend this book to those who wish to read a quick, light-hearted book with humour, romance and a thrilling adventure. I would not recommend this book to the younger audience due to the slight mature content.

I would give the book a rating of three out of four stars. The story-line is captivating and the reader gets drawn into reading this short novel. What lets it down is the repeated common mistakes with punctuation and grammar. Often overlooked, but still prominent. Fixing these minor mistakes would then, in my opinion, give this novel a full four out of four rating.
