Calling all fans of NCIS and Tom Clancy! I have the next series that will keep you coming back for suspense and "will they or won't they" romance. Jack Winnick's Devil Among Us is the second in his Lara and Uri saga.

Lara Edmond and Uri Levin are agents of their respective governments. In the first installment of their story, the two develop a healthy and amorous relationship that makes them a dream team to fight terrorism. This book picks up a few years after the first, but you can read this book as a stand-alone piece. That fact is one of the reasons I picked it up.

Anyway, it becomes apparent that terrorists are sneaking into America under the guise of being Jewish for deep cover and long game attacks. Lara and Uri team up again to trace the source of the immigration. They wind up in Texas at a Conservative Baptist university that is trying to bridge the Jewish and Christian cultures. Being a Mossad agent, Uri is quick to figure out what is happening.

When a shocking attack rattles Isreal, Lara and Uri rush to explain that things aren't as they seem. However, a tense atmosphere adds to the pending war drums and the two agents are the only ones that can help their governments know the truth and seek real justice.

I was in college during 9/11, so I know this feeling of uber patriotism and the mystique of Mossad that permeates this book. This story felt like what my experience in America was during that time. The sense that we (America) were the last defense against terrorism and the idea that the enemy was everywhere. I felt like I was reading an episode of NCIS. And that's a compliment.

The book is very well written and well thought out. I followed the plot pretty easily and I enjoyed the nostalgic epicness of the portrayals of Lara and Uri. They are the archetypal heroes that came out of the post 9/11 time period. Mr. Winnick is truly talented and knows how to tell a story. I liked the couple and was rooting for them. I will probably go back to this series. I give it 3 stars out of 4 because the book dragged when Lara or Uri were not the viewpoint. The bad guys take over the story occasionally and it feels a little bit of mustache-twirling. However, I know that my post 9/11 American experience may color my opinion of that aspect of the story.

Honestly, if you are a political thriller, Tom Clancy, or NCIS fan, Jack Winnick has your next fix and buckle up for some good story development!
