Review by Tummie26 -- Shadow Game by A.M. Adair
I am not a fan of military and history fiction books but I have now changed my mind after reading a superb novel called Shadow Game. The novel is the first of intended 3 part series and it is written by A.M. Adair and it is her first debut. The novel consists of 300 pages and it was published in October 10 2019.
Elle Anderson is perceived by her neighbours as an ordinary woman from a rich family and when they don't see her around they assume she has travelled or visiting relatives. She is a famous photographer to most of the people that know her. The truth is Elle is a secret agent working for the CIA. She is a strong character, intelligent, resourceful and capable of carrying out most dangerous missions. She has always succeeded in accomplishing her missions because of her operational tactics. In addition Elle Anderson is not emotionally driven, she knows her strengths and weaknesses. This time around Elle has been sent by her bosses to Iraq where she leads a small group that consists of two computer nerds, Jack and Eve. Third member of the group is Tex and he is the only one in the group with a military background and he is Elle's assistant (second in command). Elle is over protective when it comes to her team and treats them like family. She has been assigned to destroy the most dangerous terrorists that disguises themselves as a religious group, ISIS. She is very strategic and always trusts her instincts therefore she knows that simply killing her targets isn't enough and she plans to turn Daesh group of terrorists against itself. During the cause of her mission to take down the terrorists influencial forces cause a chain of events that end in disaster. The novel is told from a diplomatic level and very heavy on action.
The writing style of the author is enthralling to read. I love how the author really makes you go through a sense that you are part of the novel. The author portrays knowledge of what she is talking about. The characters communication is enjoyable and lively. In addition the scenery were well written and developed. My favourite character is Elle because she portrayed true spirit of leadership especially the part where she allowed herself to be vulnerable and stay out of her normal character. The novel was not predictable therefore this made me eager to know more, especially of the events to unfold and I think that escalated to the ending suprising me alot.
Though I have enjoyed reading this book it contains alot of profanity and few erotic scenes. There is a scene that is described, as one of the characters expresses her anger in this manner, "No f****g way this is bullshit and they can go to hell", on page 268. Another scene on page 133 is described as "two characters touching each other intimately and sharing a kiss". Series of events move, develop very quickly, in suspense and very well described.
I rate this novel as a 4 out of 4. I have rated it as a 4 out of 4 because it is an excellent read and I didn't notice any typos when reading. This novel is exceptionally edited and though I was suprised by the ending where I learned that it's the first series of part 3. I recommend it for mature adults only because the novel contains profanity and erotic scenes. If an individual is a fan of thriller, tension and uncertainty novels then I recommend Shadow Game. I don't recommend this novel for youngsters because of profane words and provocative scenes.
