The Commander written by Dan E. Hendrickson is about a newly appointed commander, Jacob Edwards, the captain of the Coast Guard ship First Responder. Commander Jacob Edwards is not just a normal Coast Guard, but also a member of a secret elite inter- military/law enforcement task force that takes their orders directly from the President of the United States. Commander Edwards needs to save the Gulf of Mexico from multiple threats from terrorist attacks. The attackers were planning on sabotaging the oil rigs to make sure the Prince of the Saudi Arabia could economically/financially benefit in his oil company.

I really enjoyed how the book started off with a bang and followed through with exciting, heart-racing action until the very end. At the end of the book I couldn`t put it down and was on the edge of my seat. The book is well balanced with Commander Edwards` family and the Russians blackmailing the people to get what they want. These terrorist would stop at nothing to make sure they succeed in their mission.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone that loves action and has an understanding of the military ranks or knowledge of the Coast Guard. The ranking of all the personnel in the book can become quite overwhelming if you don`t understand the different ranks and their responsibilities. The book was perfectly edited, easy to read and to follow. Every time there is a change of location, scene or character there will be written in bold the need to know details. These really helped me to follow the story and making it easier to understand what is happening when and where. There was a happy ending, but also a tragedy which kept me on my toes with this book.

I really wish the writer could have given more details at the end when Commander Edwards saved the day. It feels like the end was a little bit rushed and he could have put in more detail about the time the people were kept hostage, how they were taken back to shore and if anyone was injured. There was very little detail about the hostages that were saved.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would have given this book a 4 star rating if it wasn`t for the way I feel the ending was rushed, but other than that this book was amazing and I enjoyed reading my first book from this author.
